Field notes/05

Complaints versus verifiable evidence

User reports can reveal patterns, but identity, incentives and context may be unknown.

01

Use complaints as leads

Look for specific, repeated and independently checkable details: dates, terms, withdrawal rules, contact channels and document wording. Counts alone can be manipulated in either direction.

02

Label allegations

Do not convert a forum statement into an established fact. Quote sparingly, remove unnecessary personal information and note whether the company has responded.
